International Nurse / Travel Nurse
International nursing (also known as travel nursing) involves traveling the world and caring for patients where professional nursing services are needed. Like in any nursing career in the U.S., you’ll need your RN to begin; having your ASN or BSN. In an international career, it’s helpful if you are multilingual. Your job description will include documenting medical histories, taking vital signs, educating groups and individuals on various health conditions and concerns, and administering treatment and medication where needed.
Education Necessary for International Nursing Career
To become a registered nurse, it is necessary that you have at least an associate of science in nursing (ASN) or a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN). Once you have completed your nursing school program, you’ll be eligible to take your National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX – RN). Passing this exam will qualify you to work as a registered nurse.
Online nursing programs are widely available. This is a great option for working individuals that don’t have time to otherwise study in a full-time nursing program. Schools such as the Kaplan University offer excellent online school programs that allow you to study on your own time while continuing to work or care for a family. For individuals who already have their RN, but want to continue to a Masters degree, a program called RN–to–MSN includes a bachelor’s degree in nursing with the Masters. This is called a bridge program.
Within each masters program, there are generally areas of specialty that you can study. Many individuals choose to specialize in an area that allows them to work as a Physician’s Assistant (PA), Nurse Practitioner (NP), or Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS). These yield to high-paying nursing jobs that allow practitioners to work in-depth with patients, doing much of the same work that a physician does.
International Nursing Salary
Registered nurse salary varies greatly depending on your level of education, particularly for international nursing jobs. It’s difficult to determine how much you will make as a traveling nurse. Much will depend on the travel nurse agency. Many travel nurses/international nurses make around $75,000 per year.
